Ladies Fashion In The 1960's

The 1960's was a decade of diverse trends.

The early 1960's fashion was mirrored after the fashion style of First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. Women wore pastel colored suits that had short boxy jackets & over-sized buttons. Simple geometric dresses, known as Shifts were very popular. Evening wear included Ball gowns that were full-skirted. The gowns often had close fitting waists & low cleavage. On the more casual side, capri pants were very popular.

The mid 1960's came the birth of the mini skirt. Almost every stylish female in the western world wore a mini. The mini dress was usually A-Line in shape or a sleeveless Shift. Also very popular in the mid 60's was the "space look", style. With trouser suits, white boots, goggles, and box-shaped dresses whose skirts soared three inches above the knee. These were mainly designed in fluorescent colors and shiny fabrics such as PVC.

Bell bottom pants were the popular alternative to the Capri pants.

The late 1960's brought the hippie style. The Hippie outfit was frayed bell-bottomed jeans, tie-dyed shirts, work shirts, and headbands. Wearing sandals or going barefoot was also part of the hippie look. Many young women opted to go braless. Indian prints, batik and paisley were the fabrics preferred.

Another popular look for women and girls which lasted well into the early 1970s was the suede mini-skirt worn with a French polo-neck top, square-toed boots, and beret cap.  Animal prints were also popular for women in 1969. Women's shirts often had transparent sleeves.
